‘Martin Connelly’ is based on one of our only photographs of our Kalkadoon ancestor. This painting continues my love of working with archives.
It examines the history of the records themselves contained in their materiality. In this case cut to frame his face and creased finely, the foxing of surrounding paper - textures effloresced in paint. A gentle meditation on the visible course of time, that echoes the passage of memory.
It plays with the implications of enlarging something tiny. A portal to a person, the traces of their history and my ancestry. The universal experience of researching - and quite simply - getting to know someone.
