First...‘Fire Country’ is a furniture and photography installation made by James Tylor in collaboration with Rebecca Selleck.
The work addresses the physical and cultural significance of fire in Australia. First Nations people learnt over millennia how to control wildfires to clear the land and encourage regermination, with many of the country’s plants and animals relying on seasonal burns.
Comprising a living room and dining setting, the furniture is made from Australian Eucalypt timber species burnt to carbon black and sealed with animal fats.
The photographic prints document ecosystems that have experienced catastrophic fires in recent years, presented in burnt timber frames. Sprouting from the blackened furniture are polished bronze casts of hopeful new leaf shoots and post-fire fungi.2of 2 -
