At its centre are candlesticks belonging to Jarvis’s grandmother, objects carrying the intimacy of family history and memory. Around them, bells and other objects appear suspended against a dark ground, creating a scene that feels caught somewhere between a still life, a dream, and a warning.
Throughout Jarvis’s practice, flames recur as a symbol for pain. Here, the lit candles introduce that bodily experience into an otherwise carefully composed domestic setting. Drawing on the visual language of Surrealism, PREMONITION shifts familiar objects from their expected contexts, allowing them to become uncanny and symbolic. The result is a painting shaped by anticipation: a sense that something is about to happen, even if its nature remains unknown.3of 3
