varying symbolic and linguistic approaches to communicating chronic pain. These two
works imagine pain as two houses trying to converse. Linguistic expression meets
visually overwhelming symbolic systems; distorted and abstracted. Together, they
suggest how symptoms of chronic pain can be expressed differently between bodies,
showcasing widely varied means of conceptualising and translating pains’ lived
experience, even when the underlying experience is shared. By replacing the body with
the house, the diptych reflects on pain as something that we inhabit as equivocally as it
inhabits us; invisible, persistent, and needing to be understood.
