A trace of smoke introduces an ambiguous human presence within the landscape. Its source remains uncertain, suggesting either a fire made by people or a naturally occurring bushfire.
This uncertainty is central to the painting. Rather than presenting human activity as the defining feature of the landscape, Bain allows it to recede, drawing attention to the continued life and presence of Country. As the concluding work in the series, Gadjal (Smoke) offers a contemplative ending to the journey, reflecting on the passage of time and the understanding that, long after human traces disappear, Country will remain.
