Conceived as both celebration and exploration, Portrait23 will take over the Gallery for five months between March and August 2023. Its central premise is portraiture’s limitless potential – its power to delight and disarm, to generate questions about who we are and, collectively, who we’d like to be. Portrait23 will interrogate the genre; to challenge pre-conceived ideas of what portraiture can be; and to engage afresh with the role of the portrait in exploring contemporary ideas around identity.
