Beauty and desire can exist within the fields of death and the threats of bad luck.

Beauty and desire can exist within the fields of death and the threats of bad luck. Moving in Quiet offers a rich and layered exploration of cultural heritage, personal identity and transformation, unfolding through a delicate blend of tradition, symbolism and surrealism. Inspired by Louise’s recent trip to China, the exhibition invites viewers to slow down and inhabit a contemplative space where the familiar and the foreign, the past and the present, converge in unexpected ways. Her intricate paintings, reimagined architectural forms and text-based works recontextualise chinoiserie, challenging and expanding its visual language to reflect the nuances of third-culture identity, alienation and rediscovery.

Across the exhibition, themes of the afterlife, ancestral presence and religious belief surface quietly yet persistently, revealing Louise’s sensitivity to the unseen structures that shape human experience. These spiritual and cultural undercurrents evoke a sense of continuity between generations and point toward the ways tradition can simultaneously anchor and unsettle. The works move between delicacy and intensity, inviting viewers to sense rather than simply observe, engaging with the emotional resonance that sits beneath the surface of their imagery.

At the heart of the exhibition is In Search of the Place Between the Clouds and Mountains, a major new painting that exemplifies Louise’s technical mastery. Meticulously layered and symbolically rich, it rewards sustained looking, revealing hidden imagery, embedded narratives and subtle shifts in tone that unfold gradually with time. The work functions as a portal: an entry point into the complex terrain of cultural inheritance, longing and transformation that defines the exhibition as a whole.

Moving in Quiet is ultimately a meditative invitation to engage deeply and personally with Louise’s practice. It encourages viewers to linger in the in-between spaces she constructs – spaces where memory meets imagination, where tradition bends toward reinvention, and where identity is understood as something continuously in motion. Through this quiet, attentive mode of looking, the exhibition opens up a profound reflection on belonging, spirituality and the fragile beauty of becoming.
