Minyma Maku (Witchetty Grub Women) brings together women artists from Mimili in a celebration of collective practice and the community that surrounds it.Collaboration sits at the heart of life and artmaking in Mimili. Knowledge is shared across generations, and artists work alongside one another in a studio shaped by conversation and exchange. While each artist brings her own visual language, their practices are connected through shared relationships to Country and culture. The title, Minyma Maku, meaning Witchetty Grub Women, speaks to the women at the centre of this community. It reflects their relationships with one another and the ways cultural knowledge continues to be shared and carried forward through contemporary art practice. The exhibition reflects this sense of community. Rather than presenting a single story or experience, Minyma Maku brings individual voices into conversation with one another. Different approaches to painting and storytelling sit together, revealing the individuality of each artist while also speaking to the strength of the collective.Together, the works offer a reflection of Mimili as a living community, shaped by many voices and generations, and grounded in an enduring connection to Country and culture.
Join us for the opening celebration on 28 October, Wednesday, 5 - 7pm. All welcome. No RSVP.
