Google Doodle

Thea Anamara Perkins has painted a portrait celebrating the life of Ngarrindjeri, Kokatha, Pitjantjatjara singer, creative and activist Ruby Hunter, who consistently used her voice to advocate for women’s rights and uplift First Nations Peoples. The pelican in the image signifies one of Ruby’s cultural totems, which was a prominent symbol in her life and work.

Thea shared her thoughts behind the making of this Doodle:

Why was this topic meaningful to you personally?

It was an absolute privilege to be invited to honour Aunty Ruby Hunter as she is definitely a hero for me. She is a trailblazer for First Nations women in music. It is very special to be a small part of keeping her story alive, as well as sharing it with new audiences. I look up to her and all of the values she embodied. The importance of family, keeping us together and strong, her boundless generosity and dedication to bringing everyone up with you.

What were your first thoughts when you were approached about the project?

I was conscious of the importance of doing justice to her legacy. I knew that it was important to get it right, so working alongside her family was essential. When trying to capture such a monumental life music, culture, Country and family were key aspects to weave into the work.

Did you draw inspiration from anything in particular for this Doodle?

She is already a great inspiration for me. In my work I often delve into my family's archives so it was very inspiring to be given access to Aunty Ruby's family archives. It was a wonderful moment to come across the image that was referenced in the portrait; surrounded by friends and family, guitar in hand - her beautiful smile and spirit radiating out. She was culturally strong, so it was beautiful to see and reference images of her country and incorporate her totem.

What message do you hope people take away from your Doodle?

Her family shared that she considered music and dance to be medicine, and I think it's beautiful to celebrate her legacy of healing. She had an extraordinary life and is an example to us all of having the strength to overcome great adversity with profound grace. She is a beacon of the power of love and in her words "When one shines, we all shine"
