Marry You Horizon Sea Room Sirius Unfolding Self also features a ceramic vessel by Natalie O’Loughlin. Here, the vessel is paired with banksias on a sill, while the letters MA balance on the horizon. MA carries multiple meanings: it’s “Ma” (as in “mother,” the name my son called me during his first two years), a nod to the Swedish artist Mamma Andersson, my son’s initials in reverse (August Maestri), and the first two letters of “Marry.” This work blurs interior and exterior space, referencing threshold spaces that are both physical and emotional. The black structure in the lower left corner refers to Sydney’s iconic former public housing complex, the Sirius building—a recurring motif in my practice that alludes to my own upbringing in public housing in northern NSW.
