Blak Avatar draws inspiration from the blockbuster animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005 – 2008). In Avatar, most of the characters can manipulate one of four elements: water, earth, fire or air. Only one character, the Avatar, can master all of the elements and is responsible for maintaining harmony between the four nations of this fictional world. In Dylan’s work, he ‘Indigenises’ the Avatar, drawing parallels between this character and the depth of connection to the elements which many First Nations peoples maintain and uphold. The Avatar is also a medium who can connect with physical and spiritual worlds. In this way, Dylan hints at the spiritual connections felt between current generations and the Ancestors.
