Thea’s memory mirage series seeks to push Thea’s landscape painting practice further. The series documents the sun rising and setting over The Old Telegraph Station outside Mparntwe / Alice Springs, exploring not only time, but colour and form.
‘I wanted to challenge myself with a sustained focus. As a body it articulates the passage of light over the course of a day. The works became at once temporal and atemporal.’
Resisting the contemporary appetite for the “next” new and different idea - the series took inspiration from non-Western traditions of revisiting, most famously demonstrated by Hokusai or - literally closer to home - the painters of the central and western deserts.
