Sally Scales: New Works.: N.Smith Gallery

Upcoming exhibition
  • Overview
Sally Scales: New Works., N.Smith Gallery

Sally Scales’ new exhibition brings together a body of work grounded in Country, memory, and the enduring presence of tjukurpa. A proud Pitjantjatjara woman from the far west of the Anangu Pitjantjatjara Yankunytjatjara (APY) Lands in remote South Australia, Scales paints vibrant, expansive landscapes that speak to her ancestral home. These are not simply depictions of place, but expressions of knowledge systems passed through generations: living, shifting, and held in deep cultural continuity.

Her distinct visual language draws from the practices of her grandmothers, Kuntjiriya Mick and Kunmanara (Wawiriya) Burton, and her mother, Josephine Mick. Through this lineage, Scales develops a surface that is both rhythmic and intuitive, where colour, gesture, and repetition carry the weight of inherited stories. Each work sits between abstraction and mapping, a way of seeing and understanding Country that resists fixed perspective, instead offering something more immersive and relational.

Interested? Sally is busy making work for the show, but we're happy to send you a preview once the works are ready. Just let us know.
