Joan Ross: Hidden in plain sight.: N.Smith Gallery

Upcoming exhibition
  • Overview
Joan Ross: Hidden in plain sight., N.Smith Gallery

Joan Ross’ new exhibition continues her incisive examination of Australia’s colonial histories and the visual languages through which they have been formed.

Drawing on the traditions of colonial portraiture and still life, Joan disrupts familiar images and symbols to expose the power structures embedded within them. Her work is characteristically irreverent, unsettling established narratives and question who has been represented, who has been excluded, and how these histories continue to shape contemporary Australia.

Presented across N.Smith Gallery and Sydney Contemporary, the exhibition extends Joan’s longstanding interrogation of ownership, status, and belonging, bringing the conventions of portraiture and still life into sharp conversation with the present through the unmistakable lens of Joan Ross.

Join us for the opening celebration. Friday 28 August, 6–8pm. All welcome, no RSVP required.

Interested? Joan is busy making work for the show, but we're happy to send you a preview once the works are ready. Just let us know.
