Joan Ross’ new exhibition continues her longstanding interrogation of Australian colonial history, examining greed, the legacy of colonisation, and the insidious ways power and ownership continue to shape Australian identity. Through a series of works that reimagine colonial portraiture and still life, Joan brings to light the ways colonial attitudes and structures of power remain present today.
Drawing from the visual language and conventions of colonial art history, Joan creates fictitious narratives that unsettle familiar accounts of Australia’s past. By inserting new perspectives into historical imagery, she asks who has been given the authority to record history and from what perspective, and how these narratives continue to shape our understanding of the present.
