Louise Zhang’s commission for The Galeries.
Commissioned earlier this year by The Galeries and Dot Dot Dash to coincide with Lunar New Year, Zhang’s new body of work embraces the fluidity, translucence and sensitivity of silk. Long associated with Chinese culture, ceremony and exchange, the material becomes both a symbolic and physical foundation for works that reflect on renewal, transformation and continuity.
Botanical and symbolic motifs emerge across the silk surface, with peaches, ginkgo leaves, lotus pads, seeds and oranges carrying layered associations with longevity, hope, harmony, growth and prosperity. Through subtle shifts in colour and texture, Zhang creates works that invite quiet contemplation, where beauty, cultural memory and meaning unfold through close looking.
